The past week in the MLB has had a little bit of everything, and we’re still seeing a ton of movement in the 10-15 range of our power ratings. The Tampa Rays have finally cracked the top 5! Yeah, we may be a little late on them, but we’re still not completely convinced that they’re a better team than the top 3 or 4. At least, not yet, anyway. They currently hold a 0.5 game lead over the loaded AL East. The Mets, Giants, and White Sox all hang onto their division leads, while the NL Central and AL West races start to heat up again. As we move through June, we’ll start to get a better idea of which teams will be buyers and which teams will be sellers as the trade deadline on July 31st creeps closer. Let’s see who this week’s biggest movers were:

Key Takeaways:
- The Yankees have now lost 10 of their last 13 games, including a 3-game weekend series with their rivals the Boston Red Sox in which they were swept at Yankee Stadium. Where’s the offense we keep hearing about?
- The San Francisco Giants continue winning baseball games, including taking 3 of 4 from the Chicago Cubs over the weekend! Their pitching continues to be spectacular, but can they keep this up all season in a crowded National League West division?
- The Cardinals took a giant tumble in our ratings, falling from 9th to 16th. They’ve lost 7 of 8 games including 5 straight. Being swept in a 4-games series at home against division-rivals Cincinnati is not ideal, and this team needs to find some pitching help after Jack Flaherty looks to be sidelined for potentially months with a strained oblique.
- As of writing this, the Milwaukee Brewers are tied atop the NL Central with the Chicago Cubs as they’ve won 9 of their last 10 games, including a 4-game weekend sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Corbin Burnes continues to lead a really good starting rotation, and if this team’s offense heats up they’ll be very dangerous.
- Speaking of the Arizona Diamondbacks, they took over the 30th spot in our power ratings! They’ve been abysmal lately, losing 5 straight, 19 of 21, and 28 of 33 (yes, that’s not a typo). They “lead” the league in runs against with 325 in 61 games played.
Upcoming Story Lines:
- Boston has another action-packed week ahead as the take on the Astros and the Blue Jays.
- How many wins will the Dodgers rack up this week as the Pirates and Rangers visit Dodger Stadium?
- The Phillies and Braves have a big series in Atlanta this week as both teams look to gain ground on the division-leading Mets.
- The San Diego Padres look to continue their winning ways against two division leaders this week – the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets.
- The Blue Jays have a big week as the White Sox visit for a 3-game series and the Red Sox visit for a 4-game series. All three of these teams are hoping to be in the mix in the American League come October.
- We’re starting to see some interesting declines in spin rates as the league continues to talk about a crackdown on pine tar and other substances that help pitchers grip the baseballs better. Will the crackdown actually happen, or is it all smoke and mirrors?
