MLB Power Rankings
By Long Ball Picks
06/01/21
Well, we’ve officially made it through 2 months of the MLB season, and things are beginning to take shape. We’re
getting a better idea of which teams might be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline, and which teams can really
compete for a World Series trophy. The Rays, White Sox, Padres, and Giants have all continued to play great
baseball at the top of the standings, and we are still wondering about the Nationals, Phillies, Angels, and Twins
down towards the bottom. It seems like injuries are at an all-time high this season, so that’s one reason we’re
seeing so much weekly change in our power rankings. Let’s take a closer look and see which teams have been on
the move…

Key Takeaways:
  • The Tampa Bay Rays continue to climb as they’ve won 5 straight and 16 of their last 17. This ball club continues to defy the odds with a limited payroll, and they look like they’re here to compete once again for the AL East title.
  • The Padres have taken over the White Sox for highest run differential in the MLB as they’ve had excellent pitching to start the season. Their team ERA is an incredible 2.69, with the next closest team being the Mets at 3.09.
  • The Oakland Athletics are incredibly streaky. When they look good, they look really good. But when they look bad, they really don’t look like they can compete. Let’s see if this team can find some stability and really challenge the Astros.
  • Speaking of the Astros, they have the best offense in baseball in terms of wRC+ (116). If they get healthy in the pitching department, look out!
  • The Giants just keep winning games! They still hold a 0.5 game lead over the Padres in the NL West and they really don’t look like they’re going to slow down any time soon. They’ve been the best story in the MLB thus far.
  • The Chicago Cubs were red-hot in the month of May and are now in 1st in the NL Central. Their bullpen has been excellent, but this team is going to live and die with their starting pitching.
  • The AL east is the only division with four teams that have a positive run differential. The other two AL divisions each have four teams with negative differentials!

Upcoming Story Lines:
  • Boston has a tough week as they have a four-game series with the Astros before taking on the Yankees.
  • How real are the Cubs? We might find out this week as they take on the Padres and the Giants.
  • Will the Angels get any pitching help? This team is falling apart, and it looks like another year that Trout (and Ohtani) will not sniff the playoffs unless something drastic happens. They currently have a team ERA of 5.03, good enough for 29th in the MLB.
  • The Yankees and Rays play a key AL East series in Tampa.
  • Will anyone pull away in the NL Central? The Cubs, Cardinals, and Brewers are all currently separated by just 1.5 games in the standings.
