Key MLB Trade Deadline Moves And Biggest Winners & Losers
Biggest Trade Deadline Winners:

Houston Astros
  • Acquired SP Justin Verlander from Mets
While we love this deal for Houston in terms of improving their 2023 World Series chances, this deal did not come at a cheap price. The Mets acquired OF prospects Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford, who are both considered top 5 prospects in the Astros farm system. Some team analysts have Gilbert and Clifford ranked as #1 and #2 in Houston’s system. That said, Justin Verlander is just a year removed from winning the AL Cy Young award on the Astros. He is comfortable in Houston, and most importantly, Verlander looks to be trending back toward last year's Cy Young form. Justin Verlander posted a 4-1 record with a 1.69 ERA in 37.1 innings in July. He provides Houston with some much needed high end starting pitching depth behind Framber Valdez.

Texas Rangers
  • Acquired SP Max Scherzer from Mets
  • Acquired SP Jordan Montgomery & RP Chris Stratton from Cardinals
Most MLB fans saw that Max Scherzer was traded, but many fans overlooked who was included on the other side of this trade. The Mets acquired 21 year old infielder Luisangel Acuna, who is the younger brother of Braves superstar Ronald Acuna. Scherzer is having one of the worst seasons of his career. His metrics across the board have regressed from last season. The Rangers will be hoping that the 39 year old has one more postseason push left. The Rangers acquired some additional insurance with left handed starter Jordan Montgomery and relief pitcher Chris Stratton. Montgomery doesn’t have a great record, but he pitched fantastic in June (1.71 ERA in 31.2 innings), and he’s been trending in the right direction after a tough start to the season. The Rangers also added Aroldis Chapman from the Royals earlier this summer. Chapman and Chris Stratton provide some depth to the Texas bullpen. Overall, the Rangers look to be going all in on this 2023 team.

Los Angeles Angels
  • Acquired SP Lucas Giolito & RP Reynaldo Lopez from White Sox
  • Acquired 1B C.J. Cron & OF Randal Grichuk from Rockies
The Angels pulled Shohei Ohtani off of the trade market, and decided to be buyers rather than sellers. This team faces a grueling schedule in the month of August. With Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, Jo Adell, and Griffin Canning out, the Angels desperately needed some help. Lucas Giolito is a big upgrade from what the Angels currently have in the 4 and 5 spots in their rotation. C.J. Cron was an All Star last season, he’s a reliable hitter who can slide right into the lineup. Whether or not these moves are enough to push the Angels into the playoffs, we have to applaud their effort of going for it.

Philadelphia Phillies
  • Acquired SP Michael Lorenzen from Tigers
This trade came right at the buzzer. The Phillies look to have landed one of the best starting pitchers on the market. Michael Lorenzen was an All Star this season, and his metrics are very impressive. His ERA and FIP are sub 4, and his WHIP sits at 1.09. In the month of July, Lorenzen posted a 3-1 record with a 1.14 ERA and 0.84 WHIP (23.2 innings). The 31 year old is in the best form of his career. The Phillies traded the #5 prospect in their farm system (Hao-Yu Lee), which is a reasonable price for a proven starter with high end upside.

Biggest Trade Deadline Loser:

New York Yankees
Currently sitting in last place in the AL East, the Yankees opted to do essentially nothing at the trade deadline. They acquired a mid tier relief pitcher in Keynan Middleton, and another pitcher with average metrics in Spencer Howard. It looks like the Yankees are going to bank on the return of Aaron Judge turning things around down the stretch.

Other Notable Trade Deadline Moves:
  • Orioles acquire SP Jack Flaherty from Cardinals
  • Blue Jays acquire RP Jordan Hicks & SS Paul DeJong from Cardinals
  • Guardians acquire SS Jean Segura from Marlins
  • Rays acquire SP Aaron Civale from Guardians
  • Padres acquire SP Rich Hill & 1B Ji Man Choi from Pirates
  • Cubs acquire 3B Jeimer Candelario from Nationals
  • Marlins acquire DH Jake Burger from White Sox
  • Marlins acquire RP David Robertson from Mets
  • Marlins acquire 1B Josh Bell from Guardians
  • Diamondbacks acquire RP Paul Sewald from Mariners
  • Diamondbacks acquire OF Tommy Pham from Mets
  • Dodgers acquire SP Lance Lynn & SP Joe Kelly from White Sox
  • Brewers acquire OF Mark Canha from Mets
