3 MLB Bets To Consider On Monday April 17th 2023
Rockies vs. Pirates 8:40pm
Rockies Moneyline (-139)
This bet is a fade on the Pirates 43 year old starter Rich Hill. The old man has had an amazing career, but let’s dig into how things are going this season. Hill got shelled in spring training, allowing 13 earned runs in just 12.2 innings. He allowed 2 home runs to the Reds in his opener, 3 home runs to the White Sox in his 2nd start, and another home run to the Astros in his 3rd start. Rich Hill had 0 strikeouts in 6 innings in his last start, and just 1 strikeout in his last 10 innings. Meanwhile, Rockies starter Kyle Freeland is off to a great start. Freeland has allowed just 2 earned runs in 18.2 innings this season. The hometown Denver kid looks to have a big advantage in this starting pitching matchup. The concern with the Rockies is once Kyle Freeland leaves this game. Neither team has a particularly good bullpen, but the Rockies bullpen was the worst in the MLB last season. It doesn’t look to be much better this year. The first 5 innings price is a bit too high, so we will opt for the full game moneyline.

Blue Jays @ Astros 8:10pm
Blue Jays Moneyline (-115)
Both of these teams are coming off of bad Sunday losses. The Astros lost 9-1 in the primetime Sunday Night baseball spotlight. The Blue Jays ended the Rays undefeated run this weekend, but were blown out 8-1 by the Rays yesterday. In terms of this matchup today, our model suggests Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman has the edge over Astros starter Christian Javier. Gausman struggled in his opener, but looks to have found his command back. He tossed 8 strong innings with 11 strikeouts in his last start. Astros starter Christian Javier hasn’t been bad by any means. However, through his first three starts, Javier is allowing nearly double the amount of hits per 9 compared to last season. He's only pitched 17 innings so far, so the sample size is still very small. That said, it's something to keep an eye on with Christian Javier. The Astros without a doubt hold the better bullpen. The Blue Jays look to have the slightly better offense (currently rank 2nd in the MLB in hits & 3rd in batting average). We will side with the Blue Jays on the moneyline. Our stake is a half unit.

Padres vs. Braves 9:40pm
Padres Moneyline(+132)
We like this price on Padres starter Ryan Weathers. In two starts this season, Weathers has looked sharp. He allowed 5 hits or less in both starts (5 innings pitched in each), with the Padres winning both games. Max Fried has not pitched since March 30th. His innings are expected to be limited tonight. The Braves bullpen looks to be one of the better groups in the league, with the Padres bullpen not trailing far behind. It’s worth noting, the Padres won 3 of 4 games in Atlanta earlier this month. The Padres lineup hits left handed pitching well, and Max Fried happens to be a southpaw. Our wager is a half unit on the home dogs to end the Braves 6 game winning streak.
