We are pulling the old zig zag here in game 2 of the NBA Finals. In game 1 we sided with the Nuggets, largely due to the unique circumstances of that game. The Heat were playing on short rest, had a travel disadvantage, were adjusting to the elevation, etc. (see game 1 write up
HERE). This is a much better spot for the underdog tonight. Miami shot just 40% from the floor in game 1, including 33% from beyond the arc. The Heat attempted just 2 free throws the entire game (compared to 20 for the Nuggets). The large majority of Miami’s top scoring threats had poor offense performances. Jimmy Butler had just 13 points, Caleb Martin had 3 points, Duncan Robinson also had just 3 point. Max Strus went 0-10 with 0 points! The Nuggets offense struggled a bit from beyond the arc (29%). However, Denver’s offense as a whole played well and shot over 50% from the floor overall. Both teams did a great job limiting turnovers (5 for the Heat, 4 for the Nuggets). In terms of coaching and experience, this Heat team has played in the Finals before (2020). Miami’s coach Erik Spoelstra has a ton of NBA Finals experience, and he’s done a great job making adjustments in these tough road situations. We are going to take the 8.5 points with the road dogs.
