LHP - Left Handed Pitcher
RHP - Right Handed Pitcher
FIP - Fielding Independent Pitching
wRC+ - Weighted Runs Created Plus
DRS - Defensive Runs Saved
Why is FIP an important pitching metric?
FIP specifically measures the metrics that a pitcher has the most control over. This includes the pitchers ability to strike batters out, and limit walks and home runs. FIP eliminates all balls hit into the field of play. The theory behind this metric is that a pitcher has limited control over the outcome once a ball is in play.
Why is wRC+ an important hitting metric?
This metric measures the full value of an offense by adjusting for ballparks, eras, and league averages. For example, a team who plays their home games at a hitter friendy ballpark like Coors Field would likely have slightly inflated metrics compared to a team like the SF Giants or Detroit Tigers who play in a tough hitters ballpark. wRC+ eliminates that inflation and makes it easier to compare the true value of these offenses.
Why is DRS important to consider?
One of the most common mistakes MLB bettors make is exclusively looking at only the pitching and hitting metrics when evaluating teams. Defense is a huge part of baseball. DRS measures how many runs a defense saves on average by measuring errors, double play ability, range, outfield arm strength, etc.
