Key Takeaways From All NFL Preseason Week 1 Games
Texans @ Patriots

Texans - CJ Stroud played just 2 series and finished 2-4 for 13 yards with an interception. Stroud was under pressure on 60% of his dropbacks. The Texans all pro left tackle Leremy Tunsil did not play. Starting RB Damion Pierce was given the night off, with Devin Singletary getting the 1st team reps.

Patriots - The Patriots gave 3 wide receivers the night off (Juju Smith-Schuster, Devante Parker, Kendrick Bourne). New addition at tight end (Mike Gesicki) was also given the night off. Running backs Kevin Harris, JJ Taylor, and Pierre Strong Jr. all look to be competing for the backup RB job behind Rhamondre Stevenson.

Vikings @ Seahawks

Vikings - Rookie Wide Receiver Jordan Addision played 27 snaps, ran 13 routes, and had 3 targets. Addison was taking most of his snaps as an outside receiver. Many expected Addison to take Adam Thielens role in the slot. Justin Jefferson and KJ Osbourn were given the night off. Kirk Cousins and Alexander Mattison also rested. We expect to get a more clear picture of the Vikings offense in preseason week 2.

Seahawks - Rookie wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba played 12 snaps and recorded 4 targets. Seahawks backup QB Drew Lock was looking for JSN early and often in his limited action. Seattle’s rookie RB Zach Charbonnet played in a backup role behind Deejay Dallas. The 2nd round pick carried the ball 4 times for 14 yards. Kenneth Walker is out with an injury, so Charbonnet should have a good opportunity to showcase his abilities throughout preseason.

Packers @ Bengals

Packers - Jordan Love looked sharp in 2 series. He finished 7/10 with 46 yards and 1 passing TD. Second year WR Romeo Doubs caught the lone TD from Love. Second round wide receiver Jayden Reed looks to be establishing himself as the clear cut WR3 in the Packers offense. Reed played all 11 first team snaps.

Bengals - The Bengals elected to sit tight end Irv Smith Jr. We are keeping a close eye on how the Bengals split up their tight end reps this preseason. The Bengals backup RB position looks to be wide open between Chris Evans, Chase Brown, and Trayveon Williams (who is currently injured). Evans led the offense with 7 carries for 49 yards including a 33 yard run.

Falcons @ Dolphins

Falcons - Falcons starting QB Desmond Ritter did not play. The Falcons elected to start nearly their entire starting offensive and defensive line, in addition to their skill players. Keep an eye on WR Mack Hollins, who could see a large role in this offense due to the turnover at the wide receiver position from last season. Three of the Falcons top 5 WR’s from last season are no longer on the team.

Dolphins - Miami elected to give Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. the night off, indicating those two being the early favorites to lead the Dolphins backfield. Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed look to be competing for the #3 spot in the backfield, with 3rd round rookie De’Von Achane currently in the 4-5 spot. Achane averaged just 2.5 yards a carry with 10 touches.

Steelers @ Buccaneers

Steelers - The Kenny Pickett and George Pickens connection made a strong statement in just 1 drive. The second year duo connected on a 33 yard TD. The Steelers played the majority of their starters, with the new addition at wide receiver Allen Robinson looking to have a strong hold on the WR3 spot. Backup RB Jaylen Warren saw the field in the first series, and looks to have a legitimate role in this offense.

Buccaneers - Baker Mayfield led the charge and went 8/9 with 63 yards and a touchdown. Ke’Shawn Vaughn looks to have the early lead on the backup RB position behind Rachaad White. Most of the Buccaneers key skill players including Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Rachaad White did not suit up for this game. Kyle Trask looks to be behind Baker Mayfield in the battle for the Buccaneers starting QB job.

Giants @ Lions

Giants - Wide receivers Darious Slayton, Parris Campbell, and Sterling Shephard were all given the night off. Cole Beasley impressed in limited work, and looks to be carving out a role in the slot. Saquan Barkley and Darren Waller were also given the night off, as was starting QB Daniel Jones. Backup RB Matt Brieda played just two drives, and he looks to be in the lead for the backup RB role to Barkley.

Lions - There have been a lot of questions about the Lions tight end position. Sam LaPorta looks to have a grip on the job. LaPorta was the lone tight end taking snaps with the Lions first team. Second year WR Jameson Williams played longer than most of the starters. He remained in the game until the 3rd quarter. First round pick Jahmar Gibbs played 3 drives finishing with 6 carries for 19 yards and 1 catch for 18 yards. David Montgomery did not play, so it remains to be seen what the split between those two will look like.

Commanders @ Browns

Commanders - Projected starting QB Sam Howell looked sharp in his 2023 preseason debut going 9 for 12 for 77 yards and a touchdown. Howell was also sacked once, but overall it was an encouraging debut for the 2nd year QB. Terry McLauren and Jahan Dotson are the clear cut 1 & 2 receiving targets in this offense. The Commanders ran several 2 wide receiver sets, which should create a lot of opportunities for the duo this season. Brian Robinson & Antonio Gibson split first team reps. Robinson looks to be getting the early down work, with Gibson appearing more in later downs.

Browns - Nick Chubb, and Amari Cooper both sat for this game. Deshaun Watson played one series and finished 3/3 passing, while also rushing 3 times for 20 yards. Keep an eye on the rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The dual threat out of UCLA has been turning heads at training camp, and has outperformed the rest of the Browns backup QBs thus far. The new addition at Wide Receiver Eliah Moore left the game with an injury, but it does not appear to be significant.

Broncos @ Cardinals

Broncos - There looks to be a battle for the Broncos starting tight end position. Adam Trautman played with the first team rather tha Greg Dulcich. It was interesting that Dulcich only entered the game in 3rd down situations, and two tight end sets. Those who have been targeting Dulcich as a fantasy football sleeper may want to reconsider, or monitor this situation closely. That said, Sean Payton has been adamant that Dulcich will have a prominent role in the offense. Russell Wilson finished 7/13 for 93 yards and a TD. Both Jerry Jeudy and Cortland Sutton looked sharp and are well positioned for a lot of action in this Broncos offense. Javonte Williams did not play. New addition at the running back position Samaje Perine led the way in snaps with the first team offense.

Cardinals - Marquise Brown was the only Cardinals wide receiver not to play, and is the clear cut top receiving target in this offense. Zach Pascal and Michael Wilson look to be competing for the WR2 role, with Rondale Moore primarily playing in the slot. Keaontay Ingram and Corey Clement are battling for the backup RB job behind James Connor. The Cardinals opted not to play James Connor, and he looks to have a clear hold on the starting RB job. Arizona opted to sit tight end Trey McBride, who many believe is a potential breakout candidate this season. It’s unclear if McBride was rested, or was scratched for health reasons. He missed some practice leading into this game.

Titans @ Bears

Titans - Both backup QBs (Malik WIllis & Will Levis) struggled. Each of them were sacked 4 times, and both threw an interception and were without a touchdown. Tyjae Spears looks to be closing in on the backup RB position against Hassan Haskins. Spears out-snapped Haskins and was more productive with his touches. Chris Moore and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine look to be in a battle for the WR3 position behind Deandre Hopkins and Treylon Burks.

Bears - The Justin Fields hype train is leaving the station earlier than expected. Fields finished 3/3 for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns. DJ Moore and Khalil Herbet caught those touchdowns, and both looked equally impressive to Fields. The Bears free agent addition at running back (D’Onta Foreman) appeared to be in a clear backup role to Herbet. This Bears offense made a lot of improvements in the offseason, and the early looks of it are encouraging.

Colts @ Bills

Colts - All eyes were on Colts rookie QB Anthony Richardson, who finished 7/12 for 67 yards and an interception. Richardson also ran twice for 7 yards. Gardner Minshew finished 6/6 for 72 yards, but was sacked twice. The backup RB spot behind Jonathan Taylor looks very much up for grabs. Evan Hull started over Deon Jackson, but Jackson had the more productive game. Zach Moss is out with an injury, so there is a lot of unknown in this Colts backfield behind Taylor. Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce are the clear cut 1 & 2 receiving threats in this offense.

Bills - James Cook looks to be the early favorite for primary workload in the Bills backfield. He played every snap of the Bills first two series. Backup RB Damian Harris did not suit up for this game due to a knee injury. Deonte Harty looks to be closing in on the WR3 role in this Buffalo offense. Gabe Davis and Stefon Diggs are the outside threats, with Harty looking to fill the slot role. Rookie TE Dalton Kincaid played with the first team, and looks poised for a big role. Kincaid took a few snaps from the slot position, signaling that the Bills could look to use him in that role as well. Backup QB Matt Barkley went 14/15 for 172 yards and 2 TDs.

Jets @ Panthers

Jets - We have a battle for the backup RB position between Michael Carter and Zonovan Knight. Carter got the start, and had the more productive performance of the two. Garrett Wilson did not play, nor did Aaron Rodgers. Allan Lazzard and Corey Davis handled the outside WR slots. Randall Cobb and Micole Hardman look to be in the mix as well. The Jets have two TE’s who have a role in the offense in Tyler Conklin and CJ Uzomah. Conklin saw more work in passing situations. Backup QB Zach Wilson had a solid game finishing 14/20 for 123 yards and a TD.

Panthers - The #1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft Bryce Young made his preseason debut. Young went 4/6 for 21 yards and was sacked once. He was pressured on 3 of his 7 dropbacks. The Panthers wide receiver room looks to be crowded and competitive with DJ Chark and Adam Thielen leading the way. Second round pick Jonathan Mingo is a name to keep an eye on. Terrace Marshall Jr. will compete with Mingo for playing time. Miles Sanders did not play due to injury. Free agent acquisition TE Hayden Hurst looks to have a strong grip on the starting TE position. Hurst played the large majority of first team TE snaps.

Jaguars @ Cowboys

Jaguars - Our biggest takeaway in this game was Christian Kirk being limited in the slot. New addition Calvin Ridley looks to have potentially moved into Kirk's role from last season. Kirk was on the field for 7 snaps, and all of them were in the slot. The trio of Ridley, Kirk, and Zay Jones look to lead the way for Jacksonville this season with Evan Engram at the TE position. There has been a lot of speculation on who will be the primary backup RB to Travis Etienne. Jamycal Hasty & Tank Bigsby will fight for that secondary spot. Bigsby has received a lot of hype in training camp, and he performed well with his limited work (9 carries 52 yards).

Cowboys - There have been a lot of questions surrounding who the Cowboys starting TE will be. Jake Ferguson looks to be the early favorite. Feguson got the start and received most of the first team snaps. Peyton Hendershot is still in the mix, but Feguson looks to be leading the way in this race. Rookie RB Deuce Vaughn impressed with 8 carries for 50 yards and a TD. Vaughn also reeled in 3 catches. Maik Davis still looks to be the favorite to backup Tony Pollard, but keep a close eye on Vaughn if the production continues. Most of the skill players for the Cowboys did not suit up for this game. We will be eager to catch this offense in week 2 of preseason.

Eagles @ Ravens

Eagles - The Eagles backfield looks to be very crowded. D’Andre Swift looked extremely impressive in his Eagles debut, with Rashaad Penny getting some work as well. This backfield also features Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott. Eagles first round pick Jalen Carter made his presence felt early in this game. He has a couple of impressive plays early. Rookie pass rusher Nolan Smith also made his presence felt. Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert did not play.

Ravens - The Ravens impressive 24 game preseason win streak lives on. The Ravens did not play Odell Becham Jr. or Rashod Bateman, but we did get to see limited action from the rookie WR Zay Flowers. In terms of the Baltimore backfield, Justice Hill got the first team reps ahead of Gus Edwards. However, Edwards appeared to get banged up in practice this week, so it remains to be seen what the hierarchy between the two looks like. Lamar Jackson did not see any action, but backup QB Tyler Huntley played well. Huntley looks to be the clear cut backup to Lamar Jackson.

Chargers @ Rams

Chargers - Justin Herbet, Austin Eckler, Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and Josh Palmer did not play. We did see first round pick Quentin Johnston make his debut. The rookie WR played the entire first half and finished with 3 catches for 10 yards and a TD. The Chargers backfield has some competition for the backup role behind Eckler between Isiah Spiller and Joshua Kelley. It appears that Kelly currently has the lead in that battle, but that is a key spot to monitor heading into the season. We expect to see the Chargers offense make their debut next week in preseason week 2.

Rams - With Cooper Kupp and Van Jefferson holding down the WR1 and 2 slots, the Rams have an intense battle for the WR3 role. Tutu Atwell was given the night off with the Rams two other starting WRs, signaling that maybe Atwell is the current favorite. Ben Skowronek also looks to be in the mix, in addition to Demarcus Robinson. In terms of the Rams backfield, Cam Akers and Kyren Wiliams were both rested and look to be the 1-2 punch heading into the season. Majority of the Rams skill players did not dress for this game.

Chiefs @ Saints

Chiefs - One of the biggest (and only) question marks on this Chiefs team is the wide receiver room. The Chiefs have Kadarius Toney (injured) Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore, Justin Watson, Rashee Rice, and Justyn Ross. Mahomes #1 target will continue to be Travis Kelce, but there looks to be a lot of opportunity up for grabs amongst these unproven WRs. Keep a close eye on the 2nd round pick Rashee Rice, who looks to be earning a role in this offense. Clyde Edwards-Helaire got the start at RB, as Isiah Pacheco is currently banged up. The Chief will likely use Pacheco, Edwards-Helaire, and Mckinnon throughout the season, but the pecking order remains to be seen.

Saints - One of the most encouraging signs for the Saints in this first preseason game was Michael Thomas. He played 12 snaps with the first team offense, ran 8 routes, and recorded an 18 yard catch. Many forget that Michael Thomas is still just 30 years old, and is just a few years removed from being one of the top WRs in the NFL. Chris Olave and Michael Thomas look to be the primary receiving targets, with Rashid Shaheed closing in on the WR3 role. Derek Carr looked sharp going 6/8 for 70 yards and a TD. Alvin Kamra also got some work, as he will miss the first 3 games due to suspension. The first appearance of this 2023 Saints offense was encouraging.

49ers @ Raiders

49ers - Trey Lance got the start, and had a mixed performance. Lance had some bright moments, but was sacked 4 times and one of his passes should have resulted in an ugly interception but was dropped. He finished 10/15 with 112 yards and 1 TD while playing the first half. Sam Darnold entered the game and looked sharp finishing 5/8 for 84 yards but no sacks. Brock Purdy did not play, nor did the majority of the 49ers key skill players. It will be interesting to monitor the QB situation for the 49ers as the preseason unfolds.

Raiders - With Josh Jacobs status up in the air, Zamir White is establishing himself as the clear cut backup RB. Raiders backup QB Aiden O’Connel looked very sharp, and is positioning himself to be the backup for the often injured Jimmy Garrapolo. Davonte Adams and Hunter Renfrow look to be well positioned to handle the bulk of the receiving work in this offense.Free agent addition Jakobi Myers did not play, but looks to be the 3rd WR in the mix. Rookie TE Michael Mayer did not play.

Enjoy preseason! Bet on it responsibly. The NFL regular season is right around the corner!
