About The Course (Royal Liverpool):

This will be the 13th time the event is hosted in Hoylake but only the 3rd time in the modern era with Tiger Woods winning in 2006 and Rory McIlory winning in 2014.  When you see those 2 names as past winners you may assume that this course is a bombers paradise and although hitting it far off the tee is always helpful you must put your ball in the correct position to score well at this course.  When Tiger won in 2006 he famously only hit his driver once all week.

Weather Forecast:

The next biggest factor at the open championship after the golf course is the weather and most notably the wind.  Golfers who grew up playing in windy conditions traditionally play well at the open. The weather forecast for this year’s tournament looks good. We may see some rain on Saturday but the wind should be blowing around 10mph all 4 days.

Evaluating The Favorites:

Rory McIlroy - It’s hard to bet against him this week.  He has won his only claret jug on this course back in 2014 and he is coming off a birdie-birdie finish to win the Scottish open this past weekend.

Scottie Scheffler - Scottie is one of the most consistent players in the field and always seems to finish in the top 10 each week.  Although Scottie was born in New Jersey he grew up in Dallas Texas and typically golfers from Texas play well in windy conditions.  He is coming off a T3 at the Scottish open last week.

Value Players:

Tyrrell Hatton - Hatton is quietly having a very strong season and is currently ranked 8th overall in total strokes gained and is coming off a T6 at last week’s Scottish open.

Tommy Fleetwood - Fleetwood is the local favorite this week having grown up just 30 miles from Royal Liverpool giving him a home field advantage.  He is also coming off of a T6 at the Scottish open last week.

Min Woo Lee - Keep an eye on Lee this week.  He crushes the ball off the tee and will try to use his length to overpower the wide open Royal Liverpool.  Lee currently ranks 4th in driving distance, 7th in strokes gained around the green, and 8th in strokes gained putting.  Those stats should bode well this week, bomb it off the tee, scramble around the greens, and make some putts.
