Both of these teams are fighting for their playoff lives. The Bulls are holding onto the 10 seed in the East, trending toward the play-in tournament. The Lakers are sitting in the 9 seed, but just a half game up from the 10 & 11 seeds (Mavericks & Thunder). There’s two reasons we feel this line is a bit inflated tonight. The first is the return of LeBron James, who is listed as questionable but expected to play. The second reason is the “must win” narrative that will drive a lot of Lakers bets tonight. It’s worth considering that the Lakers had the #1 defensive rating in the NBA while LeBron James was out. The Lakers defense struggled in his return on Sunday, suffering a home loss to the Bulls. This game will be played in Chicago, and we like the Bulls chances to steal another one here. Chicago's record is disappointing considering this team had expectations of being a contender in the East. However, if you dive into their metrics, this is one of the most efficient offenses in the NBA. The Bulls rank 3rd overall in offensive field goal percentage, and their offensive rating has has been trending significantly upward this month. Both of these offenses like to attack inside the perimeter. The Bulls and Lakers rank 29th and 30th in percentage of points off of three pointers. Our model has the Bulls winning this game outright. We will gladly take the 2.5 points with the home dogs.
